MONROE, Conn. – Police allege an elementary school stay-at-home mother who served as treasurer of the school’s parent teacher organization embezzled about $45,000 and spent on a Disney vacation and household expenses.

When 34-year-old Sarah Chiarelli realized police were on to her, she moved to New York, though her alleged crimes eventually caught up with her, NBC Connecticut reports.

Chiarelli, former president and treasurer of the Stepney Elementary School PTO, turned herself in to Monroe Police last Thursday on charges of first-degree larceny; illegal furnishing of money, goods or services on credit card; and illegal use of a credit card, according to the news site.

The investigation started in March when PTO members questioned about $10,000 in expenditures, and Chiarelli allegedly admitted to swindling some of the funds for her own use “but substantially underestimated the dollar amount she embezzled, police said,” according to the Monroe Patch.

Detectives searched and seized records from her home and conducted an audit that revealed a total of 226 unapproved transactions totaling just over $45,000, NBC Connecticut reports.

Officials said the money went to a Disney World vacation and to pay household expenses. A total of about $24,000 was withdrawn in cash, some of which was allegedly deposited in Chiarelli’s personal banking account.

Chiarelli, who has no previous criminal record, originally received a $50,000 bond, “but the defense attorney asked for a smaller bond because restitution will likely need to be paid and the judge reduced it to a $3,800 cash bond,” according to the news site.

She’s scheduled to return to court June 17.

The former PTO president’s arrest prompted mixed reactions from readers online.

“No one person should have control over a spending account for any organization and most of all no credit cards should ever be used,” 1Connman posted to News 8. “It is too easy to have access to an account. Any checks that are issued should have at least two signatures on them. I blame the PTO for letting this happen.”

Poster B_Wildered opined on Chiarelli’s glum police mug shot.

“She should have sprung for a makeover with some of the stolen dough.”

Others also took the opportunity to offer their take on Chiarelli’s misdeeds.

Kelly Plantamura simply offered the acronym “pos,” while Ed Comstock poked fun at Chiarelli’s self-destruction.

“Any guesses where she’ll get the cash for … her bond? #schoolfundraiser,” he posted to Facebook.

News 8 poster Buddy Fox couldn’t believe Chiarelli actually thought nobody would miss $45,000.

“What, like she thought nothing would come of it?” he wrote.
