NORMAL, Ill. – Shawn Childs Sr. apparently wanted his son to have a good time at Illinois State University’s freshman orientation last week, so he offered to buy alcohol for underage students at the event.

He also drugged a young woman at the freshman “Preview” during their overnight stay at Hewett Hall in Normal, where police allege the man’s 19-year-old son Shawn Childs Jr. repeatedly raped the girl the same evening, the Chicago Tribune reports.

First Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Ghrist told McLean County Circuit Court on Thursday that the men were staying in the dorms as part of the two-day orientation, designed to allow incoming freshman to familiarize themselves with campus, sign up for classes and meet other students and staff before school starts in August.

“The elder Childs offered to go out and purchase alcohol for the students who were minors, and returned with alcohol from a nearby store, said Ghrist. The alleged victim told police she saw Childs Sr. put a pill in her soda that she then drank,” according to the news site.

The girl left the gathering around 10 p.m. because she felt sick, and told police Childs Jr. followed her to her room.

“In her description of the assault, the woman said the suspect raped her twice and barred her from leaving the room, Ghrist said in court.”

The woman reported the rape to police the next day.

Illinois State University Chief of Staff Jay Groves said parents typically stay on separate floor from their children in Hewett Hall during the orientation, and said the incident “has nothing to do with mischief and everything to do with terrible criminal behavior on the part of adults.”

Childs Sr.’s record shows he’s quite familiar with terrible criminal behavior. He has prior convictions for attempted murder, domestic battery and unlawful use of a weapon, Ghrist said.

The prosecutor added that Childs Jr. admitted to police that the victim was “messed up” during the alleged attack.

Groves said the freshman Preview “is a 50-year-old orientation program at ISU that has been wildly successful for freshman and their families” with no prior incidents of criminal activity, Jezebel reports.

Childs Jr. and Childs Sr. were waiting at Uptown Station for a train back to Chicago when police caught up with them Wednesday. Ghrist told the court officers found 22 ecstasy pills in Childs Sr.’s pocket during the arrest, according to ABC 7.

Childs Jr. stands accused of four counts of criminal sexual assault of a woman, while his father faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, the Tribune reports.

Jr. is in jail on a $10,035 bond, and Sr.’s bond is $20,035, according to the news site.

Both are set to be arraigned on July 29.

At least one new student on campus told ABC 7 the incident isn’t going to help ease her parents’ concerns about her heading off to college.

“Hearing this and having to come home and tell my mom that this is happening, is probably the biggest thing she is going to be concerned about,” prospective ISU student Abby Perez said.
