DENVER – A “Restorative Justice Coordinator” at Denver Public Schools faces a sex charge for allegedly perusing female students’ cell phones for revealing pictures for his personal sexual gratification.

Kendall Robertson, a 24-year-old glorified detention monitor at Denver’s Collegiate Prep High School, was arrested and charged with invasion of privacy for sexual gratification following several complaints from students this spring, Fox 31 reports.

An arrest warrant states a female student who was serving an in-school suspension told officials Robertson took her cell phone without her permission and watched private explicit videos. Robertson also allegedly “showed her a cartoon of two people having sex” and left his number in her phone.”

That complaint came about two weeks after another female Collegiate Prep student alleged Robertson “grabbed her cell phone without her permission, and found a picture she had taken of herself in just her bra,” according to court records cited by Fox 31.

Denver Public Schools officials refused to discuss the case with the media, but spokesman Douglas Schepman issued a brief statement outlining Robertson’s employment history at DPS. Robertson had apparently only been on the job about a month before students started complaining about his behavior.

“Kendall Robertson is employed at Collegiate Preparatory Academy as a Restorative Justice Coordinator. This assignment at CPA began on (April 7, 2015),” the statement read. “He is also a part-time atheletic coach at CPA – this assignment began in (November) 2012. He is currently on unpaid administrative leave pending investigation. Due to the pending charge and internal personnel investigation, we cannot provide additional information in this matter.”

Fox 31 discovered that Robertson also works for the nonprofit Young Adults for Positive Action as a Colorado Youth Leadership Coordinator. YAPA is operated by Kendall Johnson’s relative, Charles Robertson, who was indicted in 2001 for embezzlement from the city and county of Denver, where he previously worked as the parks director.

Fox 31 reporters attempted to contact YAPA, which is housed in DPS’ The PUSH Academy, where Charles Robertson’s wife serves as principal. Charles Robertson reportedly snuck out a side door when the news crew arrived.

Reporters also attempted to contact Landi Taylor, the co-chair of YAPA and DPS board member, but he did not return messages for comment. When the Fox 31 news crew knocked on Kendall Robertson’s door, someone peaked through the windows but wouldn’t come to the door, according to the news site.

The only communication from DPS to parents about Robertson’s arrest was sent by Collegiate principal Martha Gustafson May 12, and it did not address the sexual nature of the alleged crime.

“I would like to inform you that an employee at our school has been arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for viewing content on a student’s phone without permission,” the letter read, according to Fox 31.

“The Denver Police Department and DPS Safety and Security conducted the investigation, and pending the outcome of the charge, the employee has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure,” Gustafson wrote. “We will work closely with the Denver Police Department to receive regular updates on the status of this case.”

Denver criminal defense attorney Terry O’Malley told Fox 31 the “invasion of privacy for sexual gratification” statute was adopted by the legislature in 2010 to address issues with cellphones and hidden cameras.

If convicted, Robertson would be required to register as a sex offender, O”Malley said, and that will likely kill his career.

“You don’t get a second chance on something like this. You better look for a new career. It’s pretty much devastating. If that word is used (sex), nobody in the system, including a principal or a school board, wants to have that individual and be liable for them,” O’Malley said.
