LOS ANGELES – An editor’s note prefacing a recent column in the student publication at the University of California, Los Angeles – the Daily Bruin – illustrates how far some are willing to go to honor “gender identity.”

Zoey Freedman penned an editorial about her belief that the government should provide all woman with tampons because, “every day, women are being poisoned by their own bodies because they lack access to even the most essential health products.”

Poor people can’t afford tampons, Freedman argues, and the government should ensure all women feel “clean and comfortable” during their special time of the month.

But it’s the editor’s note leading into the column that’s the most revealing about what students at UCLA are learning. In an effort not to offend anyone who might think they’re a girl but has the anatomy of a man, or vice versa, the Daily Bruin editor apparently felt compelled to set the record straight.

From the Daily Bruin:

Editor’s note: This blog post refers to individuals who menstruate as women because the author wanted to highlight gender inequality in health care. We acknowledge that not all individuals who menstruate identify as women and that not all individuals who identify as women menstruate, but feel this generalization is appropriate considering the gendered nature of most health care policies.

The note wasn’t overlooked by readers.

“LOL thanks to this silly editor’s note you have made your paper a national laughingstock,” rightwingprofessor posed in the comments section. “Are there really men at UCLA who menstruate?”

“Sadly, there still remains a difference between men and those who identify as men. But we are working on eliminating this remnant of the parochial, racist, and sexist past,” MT replied.

“The editor’s note was silly and unnecessary. Even if a woman identifies as a man, that person would still recognize that the author means no disrespect by referring to people who menstruate as women. More likely, the editor wanted to appear to be really smart and sophisticated but instead just ended up looking ridiculous.”

Others poked fun at UCLA’s progressive culture.

“Not all people who self-identify as idiots attend UCLA. And not all UCLA students self-identify as idiots; but the correlation is clear,” Big Giant Head posted.

“How about re-purposing UCLA diplomas to meet your feminine hygiene needs. It’s obvious they would serve a higher purpose,” AlCarn wrote.

“Leftist loons have surpassed even the most outrageous parody. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” JeffeersonSpinningInGrave posted.

“The UC will never see another penny from me. Nor will I help send my kids to a UC school, even though they would be third generation UC grads. And no, I didn’t reach this position based on just this editorial or the editor’s note. Leftist twaddle was common when I attended, but it’s since escalated to a frank embarrassment.”

Commenter GeorgeJ. took also issue with a specific line in Freedman’s column: “It’s a bit ridiculous that surgeries for sexual needs are covered (by insurance) before everyday feminine hygiene products.”

“What about subsidized sexual reassignment surgery for the economically disadvantaged transgendered? That’s as much to address sexual needs as it is anything else,” GeorgeJ. wrote.

“So you’re saying THAT is less important than tampons and pads? Don’t you think that’s a blatant macro-aggression against those who don’t naturally menstruate and weren’t born as women but identify as women?”
