BERWYN, Ill. – Berwyn Police detained four “subjects” at Lincoln Middle School Monday after a student flashed a handgun on Snapchat while at the school.

“Berwyn Police responded to Lincoln Middle School (6432 W. 16th Street) at approximately 1:38PM this afternoon (April 17th). Units were made aware of an incident involving a juvenile student, who had posted a video on Snapchat that displayed what appeared to be a handgun in the student’s possession,” according to the Berwyn Police Facebook page.

School and police officials instituted a lockdown and searched the school until they found the gun, though the Facebook post did not detail where it was recovered. Police wrote they “have four subjects being held for investigation in regards to this incident.”

Officials updated the post about two hours later, shortly after school let out on Monday.

“School authorities have been working in collaboration with our investigators, and we can report at this time that the weapon in question has been recovered, and all of the involved subjects have been detained pending further investigation,” it read. “There is no threat or danger to the greater public or within the school as a result of this incident.”

Police and school officials withheld any other details of the case, including the type of gun, potential punishment, how it was discovered or the ages of the students or staff involved. The Chicago Sun-Times pointed out that it’s also unclear how long the “subjects” were detained.

The situation left parents with a lot of unanswered questions.

“While I am glad that no one was hurt this is simply unacceptable!” Adrianna Anguiano wrote in the comments of the department’s Facebook post. “As a parent of a 6th grader attending Lincoln I can say that I am still very concerned for my son’s safety going forward. In addition, all parents should demand to know the consequences for the involved minors. Parents deserve to know.

“How did a minor get a gun? Who did it belong to? Was it loaded? What was their intent in bringing it to school? Will they be expelled? Please advise!”

“What will be done to hold these parents accountable?” Joanna Olivares posted. “Was the firearm loaded?”

Other parents questioned why the learned about the incident from the news media.

“How is it that no parents were notified of this incident?” Jenitra Strahan wrote. “I’m picking my daughter up from school and I get approached by Channel 2 News wanting to ask me questions about what happened and I have no clue what he’s talking about.

“No one from the school called to inform me and they continued after school programs today,” she wrote. “My daughter said their teacher locked the door and made them hid underneath their desk. I can’t believe this happened but I’m grateful no one was hurt.”
