LOUDONVILLE, Ohio – Former kindergarten teacher Elliot Gornall could soon spend the rest of his life behind bars for recording his students in the school bathroom.

Gornall, 32, faces 25 felony charges after police allege he recorded students at R.F. McMullen Elementary School using a pin-hole camera hanging from a wall clip in the bathroom, ABC 5 reports.

“While everyone is innocent until proven guilty, the evidence we’ve uncovered is both disturbing and shocking,” Ashland County Prosecutor Chris Tunnell said. “Although these children were unaware they were being secretly filmed by a pinpoint spy camera, the thought that a previously trusted kindergarten teacher would take advantage of young children in this way is horrifying.”

Gornall is charged with 23 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance and two counts of attempted illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, all second and third-degree felonies, the Ashland Times-Gazette reports.

Those charges stem from an ongoing police investigation into Gornall’s 2014 arrest for felony drug possession. The teacher resigned from his position last year, but an examination of Gornall’s personal computer by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation uncovered the school bathroom videos, according to ABC 5.

McMullen Elementary School Principal Annette Gorrell said Gornall passed a background check and had worked in the district for four years without issue before his recent arrests.

“He was well-liked by students and staff and parents,” Gorrell said. “The betrayal is huge.”

The police investigation revealed the videos were recorded between Aug. 20 and mid-November, 2014, the Associated Press reports.

“Gornall resigned from teaching in December after being charged with felony drug possession. He was later charged with a misdemeanor count of receiving stolen property when authorities said they discovered children’s underwear while searching his home in relation to the drug charges,” according to the news service.

“Investigators then confiscated his home computer and contacted the school.”

BCI officials told the media they don’t believe Gornall posted the videos online, and there’s no indication that he inappropriately touched any of his students, the Times-Gazette reports.

Tunnell, Gorrell and Loudonville-Perrysville board member John Carroll addressed the media and parents Saturday about the case. They said Gornall was arrested Friday and booked into the Ashland County Jail.

“Gornall, 32, was indicted Dec. 12 on eight drug charges and one count of receiving stolen property. Two of the drug charges are fifth-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs counts for possession of dihydrocodeine and codeine, both schedule-II controlled substances,” the Times-Gazette reports.

“The remaining charges, including the receiving stolen property count for ‘miscellaneous children’s underwear,’ are misdemeanors.”

Gornall pleaded not guilty to those charges, and is scheduled for a June 2 trial for the drug case. Gornall was formally charged for the bathroom recordings in Ashland County Common Pleas court today.
