DAVIS, Calif. – A California school board recently adopted a “We All Belong” resolution to counter an alleged atmosphere of fear the superintendent blames on the “changing political landscape.”

Local vandalism, bullying incidents, and fearmongering over federal agents snatching illegal immigrant students or their information from schools convinced Superintendent John Bowes and the school board to produce the resolution Thursday night, the Davis Enterprise reports.

The proclamation doesn’t seem to actually change anything the district does, but rather appeases minority families by promising to obstruct federal immigration officials in any way possible, a policy that’s already in place.

Federal immigration officials typically do not target schools, and it’s unclear whether any agency has ever made a request for information on illegal immigrant students in Davis.

Regardless, Bowes declared the resolution “reaffirms our district values, provides a clear and transparent statement of our principles, and strengthens our resolve to making schools a place where all students, employees and families feel welcome and safe.”

He tied the problems to Trump’s policies.

“Over the last few months of a changing political landscape, school site administrators and district leaders have heard from students, employees and families who have expressed fear and concerns for safety and personal well being,” he said at last Thursday’s board meeting. “I can attest that policy pronouncements at the national level are having very real and very significant impacts on the emotions of individuals at our local level.”

The resolution basically states all kids deserve an education, promises to “protect the data and identities” of illegal immigrants who deals with the district “to the fullest extended provided by the law,” and vows that the district will never inquire about immigration status.

School district trustees approved it unanimously.

Davis Mayor Robb Davis used the moment as an opportunity to take shot at Trump.

“Let’s be honest, what’s being put before us by this administration (in the nation’s capital) is really a bullying tactic,” Davis told the Enterprise. “It’s to scare us, to try to make us change who we are. And we won’t do that.”

The resolution itself also references Trump, though not by name.

It alleges “the national presidential election results and pronouncements from national political leaders” has Muslim, gay and other minority students feeling “targeted or marginalized.”

While nearly everyone in the liberal California town applauded the move, some thought it should focus in more on Muslims and immigrants, the Enterprise reports.

“I have been pushing for us to make a statement like this since the mass shooting in Orlando last June … though the summer, the rhetoric got heated against Muslims and immigrants,” trustee Madhavi Sunder said. “I worry that the language is a little broad … I wonder if it could benefit from a little editing.”

The board approved the symbolic resolution as is, but board president Barbara Archer and Sunder are now forming a special subcommittee to spend more time going over the wording to get it just right.

“It’s a complex document,” Archer said, “but I am all for passing it tonight and brining edits back later. I understand the urgency …”
