ANTIOCH, Calif. – A black California school trustee is taking heat for a Twitter attack against U.S. Rep. John Lewis and support for President-elect Donald Trump.

“John Lewis is a ‘has been.’ A sore loser who has not served his constituents in Georgia,” Contra Costa County school board trustee Jeff Belle posted to the social media site Sunday.

Belle’s comments drew an immediate reaction from his critics in the largely liberal Bay Area, many of whom attacked Belle himself for a conviction last year for lying about his educational background during his 2014 campaign for the school board, the East Bay Times reports.

“Well, at least we can verify John Lewis’ life’s work,” one woman posted. “Looks like Belle is a fraudster.”

“A ‘has been?’ You’re a, ‘never was, never will be,’” another wrote.

The kerfuffle stems from a recent feud between Lewis, a civil rights activist turned 16-term career politician representing Atlanta, over the weekend. Lewis told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that he doesn’t “see the president-elect as a legitimate president,” and credited Russian hackers with handing the election to The Donald.

Trump responded on Twitter with a scathing critique of Lewis’ work in Atlanta.

“Congressman John Lewis should spend more time fixing and helping his district, which in in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results,” Trump wrote. “All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!”

Lewis has since attempted to leverage the controversy to fund his re-election campaign, The American Mirror reports.

Belle, a black Republican Trump supporter, echoed the president-elect’s position in an interview with the East Bay Times on Monday.

“If any congressman delegitimizes the president, I have a problem with it,” Belle said. “In my opinion, John Lewis should focus on his constituents in Georgia … instead of grandstanding.”

“Perhaps (Lewis) was something in the ‘60s, But I know his district is one of the worst in Georgia in terms of poverty,” Belle said.

According to the Times:

Earlier this year, Belle received 20 hours of community service as part of a diversion program from a misdemeanor charge of lying on his election paperwork about his college education, which was discovered by this newspaper in a story during his 2014 campaign. He still won a seat on the county board of education.

The state also cited and fined Belle for illegally practicing respiratory care without a license in California; he faced charges three times in Oklahoma and Florida of cashing bogus checks; and according to an ex-wife, he ran up a $35,000 credit card bill in her name before they divorced after just a few months of marriage.

The news site pointed out that Belle didn’t confine his criticisms to Belle in his recent Twitter comments, and continued with attacks against liberals and his critics on Monday.

“You and all the liberals in the County could not beat me,” he wrote. “The gates of Hell shall not prevail against me.”

“Hillary Clinton and the left are full of lies and deceit,” another post read.

“Run against me. You are a coward. I won and will always win. God is my help. Trump baby- get used to it!” he wrote in another tweet.
