COMPTON, Calif. – Former President Bill Clinton is campaigning across California for his wife’s bid to become the Democratic presidential candidate and he stopped at a school named in his honor Saturday.

The campaign stop is among a flurry of appearances by the Clintons in the days leading up to the state’s primary election on Tuesday, and Hillary Clinton is in a tight race with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the bulk of California’s 546 Democratic delegates.

For Bill Clinton’s third event Saturday, the 42nd president visited his namesake school in Compton – William Jefferson Clinton Elementary School – where he campaigned for his wife alongside Compton Unified School District President Micah Ali.

“Today, throngs gathered in the beautiful @ComptonUnified 2 hear @billclinton,” Ali posted to Twitter about the 4 p.m. rally, along with a picture of himself with Clinton. “His last visit 2 #Compton was 2003.”

“Today is a historical day for the #Compton community. To the surprise of throngs of rally attendees, President Bill Clinton publicly endorsed and acknowledge (sic) the #Turnaround in the Compton Unified School District,” according to the Long Beach Patch.

Clinton’s visit and talk about turnaround is interesting considering William Jefferson Clinton Elementary School’s academic track record of failure. The K-8 public school received rating of five out of 10 by the school review website GreatSchools.org, which shows only 31 percent of the school’s predominantly low-income students are proficient in English. Math proficiency is even worse at only 25 percent, according to the site.

“This school is broken,” one parent wrote to Great Schools in 2014. “I am saddened that two principals cannot support their staff and develop better relationships. Teachers cannot be happy and motivated to teach when they are not supported. This is another reason why African American parents are removing their children. ONE group is getting all perks and treated like royalty. The rest of kids are being set up to fail. I am disappointed.”

Other parents who commented seemed to confirm the toxic school environment, and some posted rave reviews.

Several folks also posted comments to Twitter about Bill Clinton’s get out the vote effort in Compton.

Many of the tweets came from SPMG Media, a public relations firm promoting the event, but some were from actual people.

“Manning the table at the Bill Clinton rally in Compton! #ImWithHer #HRC4CA #ShesWithUs,” Yanick Saila-Ngita wrote.

Yahoo News reporter Liz Goodwin quoted the former president’s remarks.

“’This state has been very good to me and very good to her.’ Bill Clinton in Compton,” she tweeted. “Bill Clinton in Compton says Trump’s slogan is a ‘code word’: ‘it wasn’t so great for a lot of people’ 40 years ago.”

Goodwin wrote that Clinton was introduced at the event by actress America Ferrera.

Other tweets revealed that Bill Clinton’s time in Compton wasn’t all photo opportunities and back patting, however.

“Woman tells Bill #Clinton ‘f*** you! My people still in jail cuz of what u did. Then u come down here & take pics w/my people!’ #Compton,” Alyssa wrote.
