VILLA RICA, Ga. – The Freedom From Religion Foundation is targeting a Georgia high school after a video of a mass baptism before football practice was posted to YouTube.

The video was posted by the First Baptist Villa Rica church with the caption “We had the privilege of baptizing a bunch of football players and a coach on the field of Villa Rica High School! We did this right before practice! Take a look and see how God is STILL in our schools!” 11 Alive reports.

The video showed a total of 18 students and one coach dunked into a tub as dozens of others watched on August 17, though it has since been taken down.

FFRF sent a letter to the Carroll County School System Tuesday demanding that the district “immediately investigate and take action to ensure there will be no further illegal religious events.”

The letter then goes on cite the atheist organization’s pending lawsuit with the Emanuel County School District that seeks personal liability and punitive damages for a similar incident, an obvious implied threat.

“We prefer to settle these matters cooperatively,” the letter read.

FFRF’s Annie Laurie Gaylor also sounded off in the media, despite a lack of specifics on the incident.

“I can’t remember another case like this,” she said, according to the Associated Press. “It’s really misusing the authority of the coach to promote his personal religious agenda.

“It’s forcing them to undergo a religious ritual to be accepted on a team. How are they going to cross their coach? They have no choice. It’s proselytizing, it’s coercive, and it’s not legal in our schools.”

School officials, meanwhile, seem interested in getting the facts before jumping to conclusions.

“The Carroll County School System was made aware of a situation that took place at Villa Rica High School prior to football practice on August 17th,” according to a prepared statement released Tuesday.

“The district is currently looking into the specifics of this situation and will take appropriate steps to ensure all state and federal laws are followed.”

The episode is the latest in a string of recent religious spats with atheists involving Georgia schools. Just last week, Americans United for Separation of Church and State demanded that the West Laurens High School band end its decades long tradition of playing Amazing Grace at sporting events, 13 WMAZ reports.

The band ignored the demand and played Amazing Grace loud and proud at a football game late last month. The school also previously started games with The Lord’s Prayer, but Americans United demanded that officials replace it with a moment of silence. In a show of defiance, “many fans” recited the prayer during the moment of silence anyway.

Band director Michael Dukes told the news site he has no plans to end the “Amazing Grace” tradition.

“We’re not doing anything illegal,” he said.

Supporters of the Villa Rica High School baptism also haven’t shied away from the scrutiny.

The Villa Rica Touchdown Club posted a copy of the baptism on its Facebook page, captioned “Share this with everyone! This should go viral!” 11 Alive reports.
