REDDING, Calif. – A northern California teacher faces felony embezzlement charges after she allegedly stole $18,000 from the local teachers union.

Ronda Jean Mackey-Fish, 54, a teacher at Pancheco School in Anderson, California, was arrested last month after a police investigation showed she embezzled $18,000 in her capacity as treasurer of the Redding Service Center Council, a branch of the California Teachers Association, according to a press release from the Redding Police Department.

The teachers union had contacted police about missing money and it apparently took them a full year to get to the bottom of it. Mackey-Fish was arrested at her home and booked into the Shasta County Jail May 10.

There are no other details available.

This situation is really no different than several others like it across the country each year in which union officials ditch the concept of solidarity in favor of their self interests. The big difference here is the union didn’t hesitate to relay its concerns to police, instead of trying to handle the problem internally and cover it up for one of their own.

The question that remains is whether Mackey-Fish’s union contract will force school officials to keep her employed if she’s convicted. Wouldn’t that be ironic? We’re sure the union would want to get rid of her, but school officials may be bound by the rules that the union insisted upon.

We also wonder what message her miserable behavior will send to her students.
