DETROIT – Detroit school officials have issued pink slips to all of the district’s educators and plan to rehire only the best, citing a new Michigan law that eliminates seniority as the sole factor in layoff decisions.

Layoffs are nothing new for the struggling school district, which remains in state receivership due to continued financial issues, but the new process will finally give district officials freedom from traditional union layoff rules that are blind to teacher effectiveness.

For the first time in a long time, Detroit educators will be judged on their own merit, instead of the amount of time they’ve spent in the school system.

“ … (W)hat’s different and what parents should be aware of is the process to call staff back,” DPS spokesman Steve Wasko told the Detroit News. “Based on new state law, all school districts are precluded from making hiring decisions based solely on seniority; thus decisions will be made based on evaluations.”

That’s great news for DPS students, many of whom participated in a recent rally to protest the deplorable conditions of public schools in the Motor City.

Thanks to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and lawmakers who supported the new law, Detroit students may finally get the education they deserve.
