FORT SMITH, Ark. – After Bill Clinton showed up, some school leaders decided they’d had enough.

Arkansas’ Northside High School was the site of a campaign rally featuring the former president and U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor in November – a few days before the midterm elections.

While some schools might feel honored to have such notables grace them with their presence, others feel like little more than political props.

Now Fort Smith School Board president Deanie Mehl wants to ban partisan political rallies on school grounds, calling the Clinton-led rally “inappropriate.”

“School officials said before the rally that it would be strictly voluntary, although Mehl said some students felt they were compelled to be there,” according to 5 News.

The pom squad performed, which the school board president deemed inappropriate.

As a result, the school board is going to consider a ban on partisan political rallies taking place on school grounds.

Mehl said she feels uncomfortable having a taxpayer-funded public entity allow partisan events on its property, according to the news station.

The board president doesn’t want to ban politicians completely, saying some appearances – such as those to “promote an initiative or to recognize student excellence” – are sometimes warranted.

It’s just those where overt politicking is taking place that Mehl feels is not an effective use of school time.

While the board has a policy that allows “outside organizations and figures to speak at and hold events at Fort Smith schools,” they’re determined on a case-by-case basis by administrators.

Mehl would like to see a “more detailed policy,” according to 5 News.

Pryor was defeated in his bid for re-election, capturing only 39.5 percent of the vote, according to Ballotpedia.org.
