JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A middle school Teacher of the Year in Florida was suspended without pay for a week after an investigation revealed students in his class flashed their breasts, and kissed and touched each other’s crotches, among other sexual antics.

Multiple investigations substantiated allegations that Lake Shore Middle School Teacher of the Year Brent Sawdy provided “inadequate supervision” of his seventh-grade civics class on May 2, the Florida Times-Union reports.

School officials launched an investigation into the incident after parents complained students played a “Dirty Dare” game in class as Sawdy worked at his desk. Both Duval County police and the Florida Division of Children and Families investigated the allegations, as well.

According to the Times-Union:

Many students had just returned from a field trip to the Diamond D. Ranch. Sawdy told them he had work to do and turned on a “Bill Nye the Science Guy” episode. Because no students paid attention to it, he turned it off and played music.

A group of students gathered chairs around a set of tables decided to play “dirty dare.” A girl loudly warned “anybody that has a girl friend needs to go to the other side of the room,” several students said.

As part of the game a boy was told the lick the floor but he wouldn’t do it. Other students were dared to licked a chair and a pair of socks and they did it.

The activity soon escalated into sexual situations.

Some girls were dared to kiss boys and other girls. One girl “twerked on” a boy, dancing close to him as he sat.

Some students said they saw students rub other students’ “groin areas.”

Two girls flashed boys, lifting their shirts and bras to reveal their breasts. A boy then was dared to lick a girl’s exposed breast and did.

Some students slapped other students’ butts and a girl sat on multiple boys’ laps.

Investigators interviewed a total of 15 students and some denied the inappropriate behavior, WJXT reports.

Sawdy told investigators he offered the class an independent study period, and turned down the lights for a Bill Nye video before switching to the radio, but did not notice students playing “Dirty Dare.”

At least one student told investigators Sawdy witnessed a boy tap a girl’s inner thigh and warned him “that kind of play could get him in trouble,” but did not take further action.

Others said “Mr. Sawdy kept telling them to keep it down but didn’t actually do anything” about students playing the game. Several students said they did not believe the teacher was aware of the game, according to the Times-Union.

Sawdy confronted students when parents complained, but “they all denied anything had happened,” he told investigators.

Regardless, district investigator James Gregory wrote that “Mr. Sawdy failed to provide adequate supervision when he allowed students in his class to participate in an inappropriate game which involved kissing and exposure of private body parts.”

Separate DCF and police investigations and uncovered similar accusations and came to the same conclusion.

On Monday, district officials suspended Sawdy for one week without pay, the first time he’s faced disciplinary action during his time with Duval County schools.

He was nominated as Teacher of the Year at Lake Shore Middle School last year, and was among 12 semi-finalists for the district-wide title, according to the Times-Union.
