WOLCOTT, Conn. – A former teacher of the year in Connecticut faces felony larceny charges after she allegedly swindled $88,000 from the local Parent Teacher Organization over the course of several years.

Alcott Elementary School kindergarten teacher Jane Gargano, 54, resigned in May, when police launched an investigation into money missing from the school’s PTO. Gargano served as the treasurer of the parent-teacher group, and allegedly used money in three different PTO bank accounts, as well as the organization’s ATM card, for her own personal use.

Police also allege she kept money from fundraisers and charity events, WTIC reports.

“Their investigation went back to 2012 and they suspect a total of over $88,000 was fraudulently obtained by Jane Gargano …,” according to the news site.

Gargano, of Wolcott, as named the district’s Teacher of the Year for 2016-17, according to the New York Post.

Gargano turned herself in on Monday after learning there was a warrant for her arrest. She was charged with one count of first-degree larceny and six counts of second-degree forgery then released on a $20,000 bond, the Hartford Courant reports.

Her next court hearing is scheduled for September 26.

“No one answered at a listed phone number for Gargano” when contacted by the Post.

Folks online, however, offered plenty of comments.

“Scum,” Jimmy wrote in the WTNH comments.

“Doesn’t say much about the brainiacs who allowed one person to have access to that money,” cephalopod posted. “Usually most accounts that are a repository for other people’s money require two signatures to withdraw money.”

“They think they’ll never get caught,” John Dlugos added.

“What about the other 48,000 teachers who are robbing taxpayers blind?” ReturnOfTheBrotha-in-law questioned.
