ORANGE, Calif. – Several news reports indicate a teacher made a 7-year-old boy eat food that he had previously put in the garbage can. Fallout? The district said the teacher’s actions were “inappropriate” and the student changed schools. Just another day in a government school…

From LAist.com:

A kindergarten teacher in Orange is accused of forcing a 7-year-old boy to eat his school lunch out of a garbage can.

Now, the story isn’t as bad as it sounds. The boy, Armando, didn’t actually eat the food out of the trash can, and it was still fully wrapped. But it’s still pretty troubling. The boy’s mother, Renee Medrano, told The OC Register that her son’s former kindergarten teacher at Orange Fletcher Elementary School witnessed him throw away his cafeteria fajitas on January 25, then plucked the food from the outdoor trash can and demanded he eat it.

Reportedly a “picky eater,” Armando simply could not stomach the chicken in his fajitas, opting to only eat the tortillas. But instead of just feeling hungry, the second grader felt sad during the lunchtime episode, “because I didn’t know if it would make me sick or anything,” he told KTLA. In the end, Armando discarded his food for the second time.

“It was unhealthy, degrading and humiliating,” Renee told The Register. “He didn’t dump the whole lunch. It was just that one item he didn’t like.” Armando was also too “embarrassed and scared” to tell his parents about the incident initially; rather, he asked them to start making his lunch daily. After being questioned by his father, Armando finally disclosed the lunchtime incident.

Renee confronted the teacher, who admitted and defended her actions. The teacher said she was worried the boy hadn’t eaten enough and felt the trash can liner provided ample protection of the food.

The Orange Unified School District’s Executive Director for Elementary Education Anne Truex acknowledged that the teacher’s actions were inappropriate and said the district would remind all teachers how to properly encourage kids to eat their food. You know, instead of picking food out of the trash for them.

Due to embarrassment following the incident, Armando has moved schools and eats a homemade lunch at school every day.
