SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Vandals refashioned protective tiles into the shape of a swastika on a high school football field near a place that prides itself on tolerance.

The swastika appeared at El Camino High School in South San Francisco shortly after graduation ceremonies over the weekend.

Robin Belinsky was driving by and took a picture of it, which appeared to span more than ten yards on the field.

“It’s up to us to let people know,” she tells NBC Bay Area. “It was an ugly thing to see – really jarring.”

Belinsky says growing up, she was made fun of for being Jewish and the vandalism reopened old wounds.

“It’s really sad that this still continues to happen,” according to Belinsky.

School administrators say someone reconfigured the protective tiles, on the field to protect it during graduation, into the symbol.

“It’s really dispiriting and disturbing for something like that to happen,” Assistant Principal Gary Gooch tells SF Gate. “We’ve got a great group of kids here, and it just really puts a damper on things.”

While an investigation is underway, police have no suspects.
